Why do I need a Website when I have Social Media?

Social Media is simple to set up and everyone is doing it so why do I need a website? Have you ever asked yourself this question? I know I am asked this all the time by my clients. My answer to them is – a successful business model includes a website and is the heart of your online presence, whereas Social Media is just a marketing tool.

Social Media

The problem with using only social media is that you don’t own it, therefore you can not control it.

Have you ever thought about what happens when changes occur on social media? Recently newspapers and news articles have been removed from Facebook, and there are always changes in algorithms which change how businesses are seen on different social pages.

Here are some other disadvantages to only using social media;

  • It can be quite difficult to optimise your social media page for Google
  • You cannot customise the page layout for effective branding
  • Your page will always be at the ‘mercy’ of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc
  • The popularity of a social media site cannot be ensured forever
  • Not everyone uses social media.

I am not saying you shouldn’t use social media, quite the opposite. Social media is a must to drive potential clients to your website.

Why do I need a Website?

By having a website you have a well-established platform where you can promote your business. This allows you to direct all your traffic from social media, advertising and referrals to.

Your website becomes part of your brand image and builds more credibility. There is a big difference in the image created in the mind of your audience when they see that your company has a website, not just a social media page or eBay store.

Some of the ways your business can benefit from having a website are as follows:

More Control

When you have your own website you have total control over your businesses online presence. This allows you to change the look and feel, update content, have an eCommerce store to sell products and add/ remove elements as your business grows.

Setting up and having all your content and items for sale on eBay, Amazon or social media means you run the risk of these platforms shutting you down for any reason. And when this happens you can lose thousands of followers and have to start all over again.

More than a Marketing Tool

A business website is the foundation of your online presence. A social media page is just a marketing tool. There is nothing wrong with creating a business page on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn or an eBay store, in fact they are an essential part of your overall marketing plan. But it is a supplement to your primary online presence – your website. Social media is going to support your website.

Social media is meant to be used as a marketing platform for driving traffic to your site. Social media sites have hundreds of millions of active users. You can use these platforms to run your marketing campaigns to increase your website’s exposure and traffic. Eventually, it is your website that helps build trust for your brand. It is crucial for a business to invest in a website. Social networks and other platforms can then be used to reach out to a new audience to grow your business.
